ORGANIC FARMING IN TURKEY

     Organic farming implementations in Turkey, has started in 1985 with demand of European farm importers in farming sultana and after that organic fig and apricot production have been operated. Production of organic products changes according to the region of different types of products that grow, on the other hand, before all else at Aegean Region and than at Mediterranean Region, Black Sea Region, Central Anatolia, and Eastern Anatolia regions they have been produced widely. Organic products in Turkey is constituted of grains, dried fruits, fresh or processed vegetable and fruits, leguminous seeds, hazelnut, spices, aromatic vegetation, tea and green tea , egg, industrial vegetables and various processed products. Some of processed products are olive oil, honey, milk, frozen vegetables and fruits and concentrated fruit juice.

     DISTRIBUTION OF ORGANIC AGRICULTURAL AREA IN TURKEY (Ha)

     Number of producers in Turkey for the year of 2004 is 9.314; production area is 162.193 ha; amount of production is 279.663 tone; range of products: number of raw products are 180, number of processed products are 300. Our country has less polluted soils, as a result of that it has significant advantages in terms of organic agricultural production. On the other hand, it has also low shares in world market shares. Marketing organic products in home market; at supermarkets, hypermarkets and at retail stores (in natural product and organic product shops) it is seen that this products are on selves which are at different parts of the shops. In recent years, in spite of the increase in organic product share in home market this ratio is 1-2 %.

Organic vegetative production in Turkey shows increase in every year. Organic vegetative products are usually exported or consumed in home market in the form of frozen or dried food.. In terms of organic production Turkey has a big potential of harvesting and evaluating

the cultured plants in organic agricultural production and the plants which grow naturally such as; rose hip, blackberry, raspberry, savory.

World Environmental Protection Foundation has declared that 60 % of imported herb medicines which are still in use, 90% of fungicides, 30% of pesticides contain cancer-causing substances and every year 1 million people are poisoned because of agricultural chemicals and medicines.
